Is Instagram enough instead of a website?

Plenty of businesses have done fine on Instagram alone for years. Until the day it isn't enough.

In short

Instagram is a good shop window but not a home. You own nothing there, and people googling your trade will practically never find you through it.

Two routes, one result short
  1. Someone looks for your business
  2. Instagram only
  3. Own website
  4. Not on Google
  5. Found

Instagram reaches people who already follow you. Google reaches people who don't know you yet. That's why one doesn't replace the other — it adds to it.

What Instagram genuinely does well

It shows work. A barber posting a good result every day sells more with that than with any amount of text.

It costs nothing, it's fast, and it reaches people who weren't looking. A website can't do that.

And what it can't

The difference only shows when someone actually wants something from you:

  • Opening hours that are correct and findable in two seconds
  • Prices you can read without having to ask
  • A booking route that also works at eleven at night
  • An answer to “where exactly is this and how do I get there?”

The first solid reason: you own nothing there

Your account can be suspended — through a mistake, a report, a hacked login. It doesn't happen often, but it happens, and it always hits the people without a plan B.

If that's your only channel, on that day your business stops existing online. Nobody can suspend your website.

The second: Google doesn't find you through it

When someone searches “barber in Kreuzberg”, Google shows the map and websites. Instagram profiles almost never appear there.

That's the difference between people who already know you and people who are looking for you. Instagram reaches the first group, a website the second.

The combination that works

Instagram is the preview, the website is the home. The post creates curiosity, the website answers the questions and takes the enquiry.

In practice: website address in the Instagram bio, and the latest posts embedded on the website. Set up once, then it runs.

When Instagram really is enough

If you're fully booked, don't need new customers and work purely on referrals. That exists, and then a website is wasted money.

For everyone else: Instagram brings attention, the website turns it into appointments.

Common questions
Can I show my Instagram posts on the website?

Yes, that's common and sensible. The latest posts appear on the site automatically, and you keep maintaining just one place.

Is a Facebook page enough instead of a website?

It has the same weaknesses as Instagram plus one more: in many trades hardly anyone actively searches for businesses there any more.

What about a Linktree or similar?

Better than nothing, but it practically doesn't rank on Google and you don't own it either. A stopgap for the Instagram bio, not a replacement.
